"From a Heavy Heart to Hope"

Full Story

SEPTEMBER 2026
"From a Heavy Heart to Hope"

Divya (name changed) lost her mother as a small child, and grew up without the care a child needs. At fourteen, her father arranged her marriage, ending her childhood before it had really begun. When her husband later fell ill and died, she was left alone with two young daughters to raise.

To survive, she moved to Kathmandu and took whatever work she could find. First in small hotels and restaurants, then when that wasn't enough to feed her children, in sex work. It wasn't a choice she wanted. It was the only door still open to her.

Years later, she married again, hoping for a partner to share the load. For a while, he did. But when he became paralyzed, the responsibility fell back on her alone, and she returned to the same work. She tried many times to leave it behind. Each time, she found no other way to survive, and slowly she stopped believing anything else was possible for her.

Everything shifted the day a friend shared her about a program called 'Mann Ko Chautari'. During an orientation session, she watched a short film called "Heavy Heart" and something in it reached a part of her she had hidden for years. Still, surrounded by strangers, she said nothing and went home quietly.

Four days later, a peer counsellor called and gently asked to meet. That first meeting changed everything. For the first time in her life, she felt safe enough to speak openly about her childhood, her losses, pain she had never let herself name out loud. Her counsellor listened without judgment, and by the end of that first session, taught her a simple breathing technique she could use whenever the weight became too much.

The relief was so powerful that she began calling her counsellor herself, asking eagerly when they could meet again. Over four sessions, she let go of feelings she had carried in silence for decades and cried freely for the first time in years.

Today, she speaks about her life differently. The hopelessness that once defined her has lifted. She believes that she can build a future, and that she deserves to enjoy it, in her own terms.
